Save Money on College Textbooks
College textbooks are crazy expensive, and the college bookstore prices are usually ridiculous! Do not settle for paying full price when you can easily save money on college textbooks with just a little amount of effort.
There are a few different ways to save money on your college textbooks and it is all up to you how you want to save. You can rent your college textbooks, buy used college books, or purchase them new after doing some comparison shopping.

If you don’t mind a book that has been used and has been highlighted and written in then renting or buying used is probably your best option as far as saving money upfront.
If you can’t see yourself with a used book because you want to be the first one to highlight and make notes in it, then you may want to buy new and then sell your book after you are done with it to get some of your money back.
Buy or Rent your College Textbooks
Renting your textbooks is a great way to save money on college textbooks. The best part is that most places will still let you highlight and write notes inside the books even though you are renting them. Of course, be mindful others will be using that book in the future and you will also be getting a book that has been possibly highlighted and written in previously.
Below is a list of companies that you can rent textbooks, buy used or buy new textbooks from. Most of them also have to option to sell your book back if you opt to buy textbooks instead of renting them.
Amazon.com– As always Amazon has everything even textbooks. Shop the Amazon Textbooks Store and save up to 80% on used textbooks, up to 70% on textbook rentals, and up to 20% on new textbooks.
Campus Book Rentals– Campus Book Rentals provides students with affordable textbooks, empowering more than a million students to study cheaper. The best part is you are allowed to highlight and write in your book even though it’s rented. Don’t want to rent your books? You also have the option to buy as well from Campus Book Rentals.
Barnes and Noble– Did you know that you could rent, buy used or buy new college textbooks from Barnes and Noble? Yes, you can, and they even allow you to sell back your books when you buy them.
eCampus.com– Save up to 90% on Textbook Rentals, Used & New Textbooks, and eTextbooks! What I love about eCampus is that you can get an electronic version of some textbooks. They also have a great reward program and a textbook guarantee.
AbeBooks.com– AbeBooks has been in the business of helping school, college and university students to find and buy cheap textbooks online since 1996. Thousands of independent booksellers – many of them local bookstores – list their new and used textbooks for sale on their site. They also have a BuyBack program as well for your textbooks.
Alibris– You can rent, buy new & used and sell books on Alibris. Alibris is unique in that they will also tell if you there are international versions of your book. International editions are versions of textbooks or other books published for distribution outside the U.S.—and they can be up to 50% cheaper than U.S. editions. Most international editions have different ISBNs than the U.S. edition, and while they sometimes have different covers and are printed on lower-quality paper, they usually contain all the same content.
As always you will want to comparison shop. I would search all of the sites above, factor in shipping cost if there are any and rental periods, etc. You can also use comparison sites like Tun.com, but I found sometimes they don’t always find the best deals, so I manually search the sites above first.
Borrow Your College Books
Go to the college or local library to see what is available to borrow; some will only let you read in the library, but if that is your only option on your budget, then you can go with that.
You can also check online libraries. Open Library is an open, editable library catalog, building towards a web page for every book ever published. They may have the book you need.
Sell Your College Books
Sell your books or rent them out when you’re done with them! No need to have them collecting dust. Most of the time you will never touch those books again so why not make some money off of them?
A few of the places mentioned above also offer the option to sell your textbooks back so you will want to check those as well as these sites below to see where you can get the best deal.
Most sites will give you an instant quote and free shipping to weigh all your options before deciding where to sell your books. You may end up selling different books to different places, but that is ok.
SellBackBooks.com– Sell used books and textbooks to SellBackBooks.com. SellBackBooks makes it simple, fast, and profitable for you to sell books. You don’t want to be stuck with old textbooks on your shelf that you’re never going to open again, so get rid of them!
Save your receipts for all of your book purchases! You may be able to get a credit or deduction at tax time for education expenses. Check with your tax accountant for more information or check the IRS website to find out more.
