When you’re trying to tighten up your finances, a 2-3 year smartphone contract can be a huge drain, and the deactivation fees are highway robbery. Rather than just resigning yourself to paying that fat bill every month, check out some of these apps that can actually turn your smartphone into a money-saver.

1. Scoutmob(Android, iOS)

Scoutmob is a coupon app built primarily around dining out, which can be hugely expensive for large families. Probably the coolest little quirk of Scoutmob is that every single coupon is a flat 50% off—so you don’t have to do a lot of math in your head to decide whether “25% off” is better than “Buy three, get one free”. The offers range from family dining to very pricey restaurants, so whether you want coupons for Chili’s or a high-end foodie experience, you’re likely to find something that interests you. Warning: the app focuses primarily on major cities, so if you don’t live in the near suburbs, it might not have much to offer you. (Cost: free)

2. Grocery Smarts Coupon Shopper (Android, iOS)

If you can get past the charmless interface, this app is a great way to get a birds-eye view on deals in your area. It aggregates coupons from your local grocery stores, but also includes deals you can get without a coupon (which are often better than competitors’ coupon offers). The real standout feature, though, is creating your shopping list—you can tell the app exactly what you want to buy, and which store you’re planning to visit, and it will tell you the cost and savings ahead of time. (Cost: free)

3. Grocery Pal (Android, iOS)

Grocery Pal has many of the same features as Grocery Smarts, with a much nicer look. It also allows you to save multiple shopping lists, which are backed up on the developers’ servers. The only major drawback of this one is the limited selection—you might want to check their website ahead of time, to make sure your favorite stores are featured on the app. (Cost: free)

4. Grocery IQ(Android, iOS)

This app is an all-purpose grocery app, so you can create and modify your lists in truly innovative ways. As you input each item, Grocery IQ helps you find the best deal on that item, and syncs your grocery list with any other phones you want to share with—that way, when you send your spouse on a grocery run and remember something right after they leave, you can just throw it on the shared list from your phone. The coupon feature isn’t front-and-center on this app, but the developers did their homework, and the selection is robust. (Cost: free)

5. GeoQpon(Android, iOS)

If you want coupons in a broader range of categories, this app is a great option. Like the name implies, GeoQpon offers deals near your location via GPS, offering deals on groceries, clothing, sporting goods, restaurants, etc. The app has a savings calculator, so you can figure out at-a-glance how much your coupons are saving you, as well as a barcode scanner to look for competitive offers on things you’re already planning to buy. It’s a slick, fun app; the only drawbacks are some bug reports from Android devices. Our team tested it on T-Mobile phones, including Samsung, LG, and HTC phones, without any trouble, but your mileage may vary, of course.  (Cost: free)

6. Coupon Cloud (Android)

This is another general coupon app like GeoQpon, with deals ranging from discount retailers like Wal-Mart to pricier stores like Aeropostale or Neiman Marcus. It has a minimal, simple interface, and otherwise stays out of your hair. Coupon Cloud doesn’t have the cool features of some of these other apps, but it does offer coupons they don’t, so if you want to have access to every possible offer, it’s worth downloading.
