THIS PAGE IS BEING UPDATED
Want to setup a blog or website but confused with all the technical details? Think you aren’t “technical” enough to do it yourself? Well you are wrong! Anyone can do it themselves and save yourself a bunch of money in the meantime! I will show you how Step by Step in 5 Easy Steps!
STEP1 Get a Domain Name
STEP2 Get a Host
STEP3 Install WordPress
STEP4 Create Content
Step5 Setup a Newsletter (Optional but RECOMMENDED!)
STEP 1: Get a Domain Name
- You want to go register a new Domain Name at GoDaddy.com (or whichever one you choose). DISCOUNT: Use the banner below this step to get a domain for $2.95!
Type in a name you like and hit search and it will tell you if its available. Be sure to pick the .COM, you can buy others but you don’t need to. Also make sure to check the price, normally $9.99 but sometimes they will sell you a domain you want that may be taken but it will cost a premium!
I always recommend you buying your domain first at a registrar, other then your host, rather then when you are signing up at the host because that way you don’t have all your eggs in one basket and if you needed to switch hosts on the fly it would be easier. This is also a good idea when you want to secure your domain name while you are deciding on a host. Its will also save you a few dollars!!
STEP 2 Get Hosting
- Once you have your Domain name you need to find a Host.
Sign up for Hosting, in this example I am using HostGator but you can also use BlueHost, GoDaddy, HostMonster or any other one you like. I personally use Hostgator and Bluehost. If you choose Hostgator I would go with the Baby Plan even if just starting out, The Hatchling Plan only allows for one Domain ( you may want to add more in the future.)
The more years you commit to the cheaper it is usually but you can also do month to month as well. After you have signed up for Hosting, you will get an email with all of the information to get your domain setup on your new host.
Inside the email, look for your NAME SERVER information, you will need that to enter at your Registrar (Godaddy in this example). It will look something like: NS01.HOSTGATOR.COM (that’s a Hostgator one so yours may vary).
Once you have the NameServer you want to go back over to your Registrar Company (ex. Go Daddy)and sign in. Go to your account, look at where it says domains and click Launch. Click on your domain name you want to change, and look for where it says Nameservers, under that you will see “set nameservers”, click that and Choose “I have specific nameservers for my domains” . Put in your two nameservers given to you by your host and hit Ok.
Now after you set your nameservers it will say that it may take anywhere from 2 hours or more for the Nameservers to propagate to your new host. Usually only a few hours or even less.
- To install WordPress you need to login to your cpanel at yourdomainname.com/cpanel
(or use the link your host emailed you to login)
Login with your Host username and password that was also in the email
If you are using Hostgator: Go under Software/Services go to Fantastico DeLuxe (you can also use Quick Install but I like Fantastico).
Once in Fantastico, Go under Blog and Choose WordPress, Click on New Installation, Choose which domain you want to install it on. Leave directory blank, fill in the information and click install. I would advise you to create a unique username and password.
Finish the installation and close out of Fantastico.
If you are using BlueHost, you will use Simple Scripts to install WordPress (I will post details on how to do that soon).
Next you can view your website by typing in your domain name. Your website will be very generic at first but can be customized to your liking. WordPress also has tons of Plugins that you can and should use and I will get into those in my next update. I will also be adding how to customize your blog to make it look great!
Some Plugins you want right off the bat are( Tutorials coming soon):
Akismet (it usually already shows up under plugins but you just need to activate it)
Contact Form (creates a contact form that you can add to your blog on a contact me page etc)
Social Media Sharing Plugins so you can share your posts (I use Sharaholic but you can use any you like)
To add these plugins you just need to login (yourdomain.com/wp-admin) and on the left hand side you will see “Plugins”, Click Add New and search for the plugin you want, install and activate! Thats it! Very Easy!
Step 4 Create Content
- Now get your Content on your blog! You want to get a few posts up so your website does not look vacant when you get visitors!
Step 5 Setup a Newsletter
I use Aweber, but you can use whatever you like.
