Tips on Organizing a Closet On a Budget
Maximize your closet space with these budget-friendly closet organizing tips!
Is your closet bursting with clothes, scarves, shoes and more? Do you look at it and get stressed? Have you been meaning to organize and declutter but never seem to get to it? Is a custom closet out of your budget?
If that sounds like you I have some easy to follow tips to get you to your goal of a clean organized closet on a budget! Oh, and one that looks good too.
The first step of an organized closet is to declutter it. Ugh, I know you have to get rid of things and that stinks but if you’re like me you probably have things in your closet you haven’t touched in a year or more.
Plus you can possibly make some extra cash cleaning out your closet (more on that later).
START BY DECLUTTERING!
In the decluttering process, it’s important to take EVERYTHING out of the closet if possible. This will allow you to actually touch each item and make a decision on it. It will also be a great time to try on some clothes to see if they still fit or if you still like them.
Once you have everything out, its time to start sorting!
Get a couple of empty boxes. Mark each of the boxes with one of these labels:
DONATE – Items in the donate box are those you will give away to charity or to a friend who wears your size. You can donate them to Salvation Army or Goodwill. These are clothes you do not wear any longer but are usable.
KEEP- I don’t have to tell you what goes here but I will. Anything you have to keep will stay in this box.
SELL– Items in this box are those you will sell at a garage sale, consignment store or online. One of my favorite apps to sell clothes on is Poshmark, you can check out How to Sell on Poshmark for instructions and my experience and tips. I also wrote a post on the Best Places to Sell Clothes Online.
I am now up to over $100 selling online and made some money selling my stuff at a friends garage sale as well. These clothes are still in good repair but no longer fit. Great way to make some extra cash!
STORE – Items in this box are those you will store for next year’s use or something that has sentimental value to it. Big blankets and winter coats, for example, are good to store when out of season. I suggest using vacuum seal bags to take up less space.
SCRAP – Items in this box are stained or torn and therefore no longer usable. If you have t-shirts or other items you can also consider cutting them up for rags.
All of your clothes and accessories should go into one of these boxes.
Of course, depending upon the number of clothes you have, you may need more than one “store” box. Be sure to set the “store” boxes aside out of the way. Leave the remaining boxes open so you can place other items in them as you take out the clothes.
Now that you have cleaned out your closet, it is time to start putting this season’s clothes and accessories back into the closet. Take the remaining boxes out to the car or seasonal storage area so they are not cluttering your room.
BEFORE YOU PUT EVERYTHING BACK IN THE CLOSET……
Choose how you want to organize your closet. Some like to place clothes in the closet by colors, others by length and still others by whether you wear them together. You will know the best way to organize them based on your own personal needs.
This will also be the time you will be able to see what types of closet organizing systems you will need! I am going to go over a bunch of my favorite budget-friendly closet organizers below.
Once you have a good sense of what is going back into the closet, you will be able to determine what closet organizers are best for you.
AFFORDABLE CLOSET ORGANIZERS
Double Hanging Rod
I love the double closet hanging rod because it installs in seconds! Its hooks hang directly over your existing closet rod. It works by maximizing the unused space beneath hanging clothes You can transform your closet by doubling the amount of available hanging space, I use this in half my closet for shirts and blazers and use the other half for my pants, jeans, and dresses.
Amazon has some affordable hanging rods you can check out here. I got mine for around $12!
Adjustable Double Closet Rod
I like this one because you can adjust it to fit what you are hanging. I opted for the other one because it worked for me but you may need an adjustable one. Some reviews on the adjustable ones mentioned the bar sliding down when clothes got heavy but it may just take a little creativity to make it stay, people suggested adding some felt or something to stop it from slipping so it may be a great option! Or just use it for lighter weight clothing.
Velvet Hangers
I LOVE velvet hangers and they are now the only ones I ever buy because it just makes all my clothes so neat, they never fall off the hangers (that was a huge problem before) and they are very thin so you add so much more space to your closet!
As a frugal person, you may opt to just keep the hangers from the store but I swear these hangers are worth the one time investments for years and years of use! You can get a 30 pack on Amazon for under $13 usually. Check out the ones I have here.
All-Purpose Closet Organizer
I like this organizer because it stacks and can be used for so many purposes. Use it for purses, sweaters shoes and more. It can also go on a shelf in the closet for upper storage OR on the bottom of the closet. You can find it on Amazon here.
Cute Fabric Bins
Bins are great for hiding things and just making the closet that much neater. I like that these also fit most organizers like the one I mentioned above. You can check out a selection of affordable fabric bins here.
Hanging Handbag Organizer
Hanging handbag organizers are a great way to create more space in your closet and get your purses out of the way. I like that they keep my handbags from getting dusty and squished. Choosing a clear one is a great way to see at a glance what purse you want. If you change your purse often I suggest grabbing a purse organizer insert to make it super easy to swap purses in a hurry.
Scarf Organizer
If you have a lot of scarves they can get lost in the closet! You can find a super cheap scarf organizer to keep them neat in the closet with everything else. I like scarf organizers that allow different size scarves because I have some really bulky scarves and some smaller ones. You can see a great selection here.
If you have it in your budget to go with a more custom look, you can even do a custom looking closet with affordable options like this next one that’s under $80!
Deluxe Custom Closet Organizer System Kit
I suggest making sure you have actually done the decluttering first so that you know exactly what type of closet setup you need. If will all depends on what you have in your closet to be functional. Amazon often has this affordable closet organizer system for under $80 when they are on sale. Check out one here.
As you can see, you don’t have to spend a ton of money to organize your closet. You will actually find that you will save money by decluttering and organizing your closet because you will actually be able to see at a glance what you have!
